Phil Spector Goes On Trial 2562544 26th April 2007 Renowned music producer Phil Spector has gone on trial for murder in Los Angeles.

Spector, 67, applauded for his work with top artists such as the Beatles and the Righteous Brothers during the 1960s, is accused of killing a B-movie actress at his Hollywood mansion.

Lana Clarkson, 40, was found shot dead at Spector's home in February 2003.

The actress, whose film roles included titles such as Amazon Women on the Moon and Barbarian Queen, had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to her face.

Opening the trial yesterday, prosecutor Alan Jackson said that Clarkson was "simply the last in a long line of women who fell victim to Phillip Spector over the years".

He described the music mogul as someone who "when he is confronted with the right circumstances, turns sinister and deadly".

Spector, who was once hailed in the music world for the adoption of his 'Wall of Sound' recording technique, denies murdering Clarkson. Defence lawyers for the music producer are set to tell jurors that the actress killed herself.

According to reports, John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono could be among those appearing as a witness at the trial, which is being hailed as the biggest celebrity legal case since singer Michael Jackson was acquitted on child abuse charges by a court in 2005.

Spector Lawyers Claims Clarkson Was 'Suicidal' 1785262 10th April 2007 Troubled music producer PHIL SPECTOR's defence team will claim his alleged murder victim LANA CLARKSON was depressed at the time of her death in his Los Angeles mansion. Spector, 67, is currently awaiting trial for the murder of the 40-year-old actress, who was found dead from a single gunshot to the head in the hall of his home on 3 February 2003. Spector has pleaded not guilty to the charges. In court papers, filed in Los Angeles yesterday (09APR07), Spector's lawyers claim Clarkson was despondent over the state of her finances and career before her death, and was even contemplating suicide. His attorneys quoted one of the actress' emails, dated from late 2002, in which she wrote, "I am truly at the end of this whole deal. I am going to tidy my affairs and chuck it..." Last week (ends06APR07), Deputy District Attorney ALAN JACKSON filed a motion to stop Spector's legal team from attacking "the character of victim Lana Clarkson by painting her as the kind of person who might kill herself." Jury selection for the trial is expected to resume on Monday (16APR07).

Spector is accused of fatally shooting actress LANA CLARKSON four years ago (03) at his suburban mansion in Los Angeles. The 67-year-old has pleaded not guilty. But prosecutor ALAN JACKSON believes the testimony from Spector's old girlfriend demonstrates "long history of gun-related violence directed at women". DEVRA ROBITAILLE worked at Warner Spector Records from 1974 to 1977 and claims Spector aimed a shotgun or rifle against her head when she tried to leave his home one night after a party. According to court documents, she says, "Spector, who was drunk, made some sort of joke and then said, 'Just so you know, I'll blow your (expletive) head off' or 'If you try to leave, I'll blow your (expletive) brains out.'" She claims he also put a gun to her head after a night of drinking 10 years later. The prosecution's request will be considered at a hearing on 10 April (07).
