Oscars 2013: Adele Fails To Get Standing Ovation For Skyfall (Polite Applause, At Best)

Adele failed to get a standing ovation for her performance of Skyfall at the Oscars on Sunday evening. The Londoner had the unenviable task of following Dame Shirley Bassey - who turned in a storming performance of Goldfinger earlier in the night - and her voice never really reached the heights of the Welsh legend.

By the end of the performance, the star-studded audience were happy to offer polite applause though nobody was prepared to arise from their seat. Django Unchained actor Jamie Foxx looked rather bored by the whole thing, while others hardly looked overjoyed with Adele's performance, which also suffered from some slight sound issues. Twitter had its say too, with movie critic Jason Solomons tweeting, "Nice one Adele - but you really didn't need that Bassey going first, did you?" One user added, "Is it me or did Adele look like she couldn't really be bothered?" while another joked, "The way Adele was miked there, "Skyfall" sounded more like "Skype Call." BOOM!"

Earlier in the evening, 76-year-old Bassey had performed Goldfinger as part of a celebration of fifty years of James Bond. Sam Mendes's excellent Skyfall - now the all-time biggest grossing UK movie - shared the Sound Editing award with Zero Dark Thirty.
