Adele - Adele Doesn't Need To Win Mercury Prize.

27 August 2011

Adele Doesn't Need To Win Mercury Prize.

Adele "doesn't need" to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

The Grammy award-winning singer's latest album '21' is up for the coveted honour next month, but Fun Lovin' Criminals frontman Huey Morgan thinks it would be better going to a lesser-established artist.

He said: "I don't know who the panel is, they do a good job of keeping them secret, but they've done a hell of a job of picking a broad range of music, a lot of people will go out and buy all the CDs or listen to them on Spotify and it's not just about sticking to that one type.

"People can say the Mercury can be a curse, but it's a curse if you don't use it to your advantage, it's a good way to get your music heard.

"Adele is on there, she's obviously up for it because it's such a great album and she's so well loved but she doesn't really need it

"James Blake has a hell of a voice, almost like Jeff Buckley, great music. Gwilym Simcock, he is amazing, things like his nomination is why it's such a good award, this dude is doing crazy jazz stuff that people might not otherwise know about."

Huey is working as an ambassador for Barclaycard for the prize - which recognises the best British albums of the last 12 months - and is pleased to be involved as he feels often people who "don't know s**t" about music are asked to front similar campaigns.

Explaining his involvement, he exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "They've just got someone who knows what the f**k they are talking about - you've normally got the Fearne Cottons who don't know s**t, but I've got the radio shows on 6 Music and Radio 2, and I've won some Sony Awards somehow, so I know what good music is - it's like Louis Armstrong said, there's two types of music; good and bad and I thought it was a good thing to go with."

Huey is presenting from the red carpet for Barclaycard Unwind at the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize ceremony which takes place on September 6 in London.
