Adele - Adele Creates Billboard 200 History With Smash Hit '21'
British soul singer Adele has smashed records by having the longest number one by a Brit in the history of the Billboard 200.
Her phenomenally successful second studio album, 21, is sitting atop the charts for the sixteenth week running, tying with the Titanic soundtrack, which was released in 1998 and also spent sixteen weeks at number one. Across the pond, 21 has spent nineteen weeks at the top of the UK Album charts, a feat not seen since 1971. Only a week before 21 became record breaking, the album was tying with other classics: Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. 21 was released on January 24th, 2011 and was preceded by the hugely successful single 'Rolling In The Deep'. 21 has, of course, topped charts all over the world and sales of the album have exceeded nine million. According to the Bbc, Adele was partly responsible for a small recovery of the US albums market in 2011, for the first time since 2004.
There looks to be no end in sight for Adele's reign over the charts and signs point to success at this year's Brit Awards. Bookies William Hill have tipped Adele to receive the Best Album and Best Female awards, with odds at 2:7 and 1:4 respectively.
