Actress Has New Evidence In U.k.'S Hackergate Scandal

New evidence obtained by British actress Sienna Miller suggests that Ian Edmondson, a senior editor of Rupert Murdoch's Sunday tabloid The News of the World, was aware that a private investigator was hacking into her voicemails. Miller is suing the newspaper for breach of privacy and harassment. The evidence was part of the records seized by police following the arrest of the private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, and ordered released to Miller's lawyers. If Miller should win her lawsuit against the tabloid, it would seriously undermine its claim that Mulcaire was working with a single rogue reporter, Clive Goodman, who was jailed with Mulcaire in January 2007 in the original hacking scandal. Edmonson was appointed to his position by Andy Coulson, the former News of the World editor who is now Prime Minister David Cameron's communications director. Word of Miller's evidence comes just days after Coulson again denied -- this time under oath as a witness at a trial in Scotland -- that he was aware of the hacking and after British prosecutors suspended their investigation into the alleged hacking, saying that potential witnesses had proved to be uncooperative. In an editorial over the weekend, the London Financial Times called for an independent review of the police investigations. "This affair cannot be put to rest," the editorial concluded. "And without a resolution, it will continue to undermine Mr. Coulson's credibility and, by extension, that of the prime minister."
