11 August 2012The passing of Freeman, Jr. was announced by a representative of Washington, D.C.'s Howard University, where the star also worked as a faculty member. No further information about his death is known as WENN went to press.
Freeman, Jr. starred as police Captain Ed Hall on U.S. soap opera One Life to Live from 1972 until 1987, and became the first African-American to win a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor for his work on the show.
He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad in Spike Lee's 1992 film Malcolm X, a role that landed him the Naacp Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
