Activist Family Groups Protest Against Planned Madonna Special
The Rev. Don Wildmon has called on the three million members of his American Family Association to demand that NBC cancel a planned Madonna concert special if it includes a controversial number in which Madonna is seen hanging from a cross with a crown of thorns on her head. In his own letter to NBC, Wildmon wrote, ""Making a mockery of the crucifixion of Christ has been a trademark of Madonna for many years. I am sure you recall that in 1989 she had a video for the hit song 'Like A Prayer.' The video featured burning crosses, statues crying blood and Madonna -- representing Jesus -- freeing a saint from his sexual repression by seducing him. This is the same Madonna who once said, 'Crucifixes are sexy because there's a naked man on them,'" NBC has said it has not seen the tape of the finished production. A Madonna spokesperson said that the singer plans to issue a statement about the controversy shortly.
