Abc Family Gobbles Up The Hunger Games
One day after debuting in theaters with a stunning gross of $155 million domestically, Lionsgate's The Hunger Games and its upcoming sequel Catching Fire were picked up by the ABC Family Channel for what is likely a record price by a basic cable outlet. While terms of the deal were not disclosed, typically first-time rights go for 8-12 percent of the domestic box office. But Broadcasting & Cable magazine pointed out that ABC Family no doubt bid more given the strong demand in the market for the two films. "It's an understatement to say that we are thrilled to add the first two films of The Hunger Games franchise to our channel lineup," B&C quoted ABC Family President Michael Riley as saying. "This tremendous opening weekend reinforces what we have already learned -- a powerful heroine, themes of romance and iconic characters will keenly resonate with our Millennial audience. This franchise will continue to enhance our network for years to come."
