49ers Player: "No Gay People On The Team"

San Francisco may be something of a mecca for openly gay men and woman, who have flocked to a city where they have found acceptance and opportunity. But if the comments of San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is any indication, they are not likely to find such perspective on their NFC championship team. Interviewed on camera during Super Bowl media day in New Orleans by comedian/talk show host Artie Lange, Culver made it clear that an openly gay player would not be welcomed. We don't got no gay people on the team, Culliver said. They've got to get up outta here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff. Several NFL players have come out after retirement, but none has ever done so while still playing. That, Culver indicated, is the way it should be. Yeah, come out 10 years later, he said. His remarks quickly became the sports news story of the day, sending 49ers and NFL publicists scrambling. A statement from the team said that it rejected Culver's comments and have addressed the matter with him. We have always proudly supported the LGBT community, it said. The team also released a statement from Culver apologizing for his remarks and saying, Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart.
