30.69 Million Watch Obama's State Of The Union Address

President Obama's approval ratings may be way down, but his TV ratings remained high Wednesday night as he delivered his State of the Union address to Congress and the nation. According to preliminary overnight figures, the address averaged 30.69 million viewers on the broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. No figures were immediately available for the cable networks that carried the speech and Nielsen acknowledged that even the broadcast figures might be subject to substantial revision due to the live nature of the telecast. Eyebrows were raised in particular over Nielsen's claim that the Fox network's Obama coverage drew the largest number of viewers, 8.96 million. (Ordinarily the Fox News cable network outdraws its broadcast sibling with coverage of such events.) But Fox's numbers were undoubtedly boosted by an 8 00 p.m. edition of American Idol that attracted a whopping 24.75 million viewers.

'Chasing Life' Could Be Worthwhile…If You Ignore The 'Breaking Bad' Comparisons 4239378 News

Chasing Life premiered on ABC last night (10th June) and the Steve Miner-directed first episode of ABC Family's new comedy drama adaptation was delivered to the American small screen. Airing Tuesdays at 9/8c, Chasing Life is "a story about love, hope, determination and support," series lead Italia Ricci tells TVLine.

Italia Ricci Stars in 'Chasing Life'

"It's about my character, April, and how everyone around her deals with her diagnosis of cancer at 24 years old. Just when it looks like her life is falling into place, it starts to fall apart - but she decides not to let it."

Being a post-diagnosis cancer drama, Chasing Life was always going to be mentioned alongside AMC's gritty, hit, drug drama, Breaking Bad, although the cancer is the only thing the two shows share. This hasn't stopped critics from mentioning Vince Gilligan's award-winner though; almost always for worse.

"'Chasing Life' is based on a Spanish-language telenovela called "Terminales," and you can't say it isn't on trend," notes STL Today's Gail Pennington, adding "Cancer is the plot device du jour" before she reels off a list of modern shows and movies that prominently feature cancer.

More: 'Now And Then' writer hints at ABC TV series.

"The possibility of death raises stakes all around. What "Chasing Life" mainly raises, though, is eyebrows, for being so laughably bad," the critic derides, describing the unrealistic portrayal of April's lowly yet promising career at a newspaper.

"Chasing Life has all the staples that you'd expect from ABC Family: a pretty 20-something woman at its center, a non-traditional and multi-generational family under one roof, sloppy emotional heart, unnecessary melodramatic twists, hot guys, badass hot guys, relationship drama, and so on," says Flavor Wire.

More: Former ABC drama 'Cougar Town' to end after six seasons.

"Cancer-as-story-driver certainly feels like well-trod territory," says A.V Club's Carrie Raisler, adding "It's clear that Chasing Life wants to take its time, to tell small stories about a big problem, and to not solely be a "cancer story.""

"Italia Ricci does an admirable job" as April but "April is a frustrating character-a type A go-getter who then immediately abandons this defining personality trait when it comes to her health, [and] her family's strange and increasingly labyrinthine web of secrets, which she immediately adds to by refusing to tell anyone she is sick."

"I doubt Chasing Life is going to have April run a drug cartel or become a baddie nor will Chasing Life undertake the stakes of an entire drug organization, but we do feel the stakes of our lead April Carver...24, who is ready to take on Boston and the world. Until she gets cancer," summarises Emily E. Steck from Buddy TV.

Michael Strahan Joining ‘Good Morning America’ as ‘Utility Player’ 4135438 News

Michael Strahan is joining Good Morning America, following the departure of Josh Elliot, it has been confirmed. ABC sources tell TMZ.com that Strahan will appear during the 08:00 hour of the show, around 3-4 times per week. Insiders say Strahan will act as a “utility player”, presenting features, lifestyle, entertainment, sports – pretty much whatever needs coveing.

Good Morning America is a $300 million cash cow for ABC, but it’s beginning to lose ground. Josh Elliot’s departure for NBC on Sundays came out of the blue and Sam Champion is already gone. Lara Spencer and Amy Robach are apparently feuding, meaning Strahan is walking into a war zone.

“They’re on the verge of signing the deal,” another source told the New York Daily News, “It could be announced this week.”

Under the new arrangement, Strahan would do double duty at ABC, keeping his gig as co-host of “Live with Kelly & Michael.”

ABC executives have been wooing Strahan to join the show since he substituted for Robin Roberts on the show last year, when she was on sick leave.

“They’ve been in love with him since he subbed for Robin,” the source said.

Strahan was the surprise choice to join Kelly Ripa permanently on “Live with Kelly & Michael” in 2012, after 16 appearances as Ripa’s temporary co-host.

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in February.

Christian Slater's 'Mind Games' Cancelled, Replaced by 'Wife Swap' 4128935 News

ABC have ruthlessly axed Christian Slater's Mind Games midseason after low rated airings. For the next two weeks, the network will use the Tuesday 10pm slot for extra samplings of promising midseason drama Resurrection. Beginning on April 15, the network will launch season 3 of Celebrity Wife Swap.

Christian Slater Mind GamesChristian Slater's 'Mind Games' Is No More

In fairness, Mind Games wasn't very good and the writing was on the wall since it debuted to a 1.1 demo rating two days after the Oscar telecast - when the show was promoted. It dived to a horrendous 0.6 in its second week and matched that rating again on Tuesday. It's the third ABC show to be cancelled in the Tuesday 10pm timeslot, following Lucky 7 and Killer Women.

Also starring Steve Zahn and Wynn Everett, Mind Games followed the story of two brothers who run a problem solving firm that employs solutions based on psychological manipulation.

"NBC's "Ironside" was probably the worst new show of the 2013-14 season but this is a very close second. And it's particularly loathsome because one has to watch talented actors like Steve Zahn and Christian Slater suffer through this manipulative nonsense" wrote Brian Tallerico in his review.

"Lovable con artists can work on TV, as they did in "Leverage." They don't work here, because at every turn the premise and plot get clunkier," said David Hinckley of the New York Daily News.

"ABC hits a new low with Mind Games, an inexplicably and ridiculously convoluted drama which achieves the rare trick of making Christian Slater look like a master of understated acting," said Matt Roush of TV Guide.

Probably knowing that Mind Games' time was up, Slater has been working on some movie projects in recent months, including Way of the Wicked with Vinnie Jones.

Getting Ready for SHIELD Ahead of Tonight's Premiere - Who's Watching? 3879389 News

It’s been called the first network superhero show to rival Arrow, which was a surprise success in its own right. That’s right, Agents of SHIELD debuts tonight on ABC, taking place after the monumental battle that left Midtown Manhattan in ruins at the end of Marvel’s The Avengers.

joss wheldon
Joss Wheldon is the executive producer of the show

Perhaps the most important thing to say is that Joss Whedon is very much involved, in fact, he directed the first episode, which has received warm reviews so far. The show, while carrying on from the last Avengers movie, is totally separate from the films; it exists in the same universe.

Fans of Whedon and his creations will have trepidations, and rightly so. The ever-popular Firefly was cancelled despite vocal uproar. What’s to stop this happening again? Well, TV.com spoke to Joss back at ComicCon, and he’s intinated that ABC – with their new Marvel Television partnership – will be a lot easier to work with.

"There's no free ride, we've jumped through all the hoops to make this work," he insisted. "The network has dealt with us as they would with any show. The only difference is they really did know what we were giving them and what they wanted." He went on to add, "We've had a real feeling of support."

If you’re a super fan, you probably won’t be reading this article. You’ll have soaked up all your SHEILD info a long time ago. Luckily for newcomers to the franchise, you don’t have to be totally clued up to realise what’s going in. There’ll be in-jokes and insider references that might go over your head, but you can tune in tonight knowing you’re being included.

Fans: You’re watching because no matter how much they throw at you, you can’t get enough of the Marvel universe. Newcomers: don’t be put off by the rich tapestry already in place; this is set to be an exciting super agent thriller.

Grey’s Anatomy Losing An Original - Shonda Rhimes Is Upset 3819246 News

As ABC’s top scripted drama, and having run for nearly 10 seasons now, Grey’s Anatomy’s characters are household names, and familiar faces, too. And that’s why Sandra Oh's exit has hit showrunner Shonda Rimes so hard.

Oh plays the confident Dr. Cristina Yang, and has done so for eight years on the popular medical drama. “Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go,” she revealed of her exit. “It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well.” (The Mail)

But for showrunner Rhimes, this exit doesn’t feel stir up the familiar feelings usually conjured by the merry-go-round that is network television – she’s losing one of the original six cast members who all started as medical interns on the show.

“I know Sandra pretty well. It was one of those things where I so wished it wasn't true for many reasons. For me, as a human being, I love spending time with Sandra, and as a writer, writing for Sandra is one of the best things that's ever happened to me,” explained Rhimes to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Canadian-born actress - who received the key to the city of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada from Mayor Jim Watson last month – is said to be looking forward to pastures new as she embraces oppurtunities after Grey’s.

“I would hope that it wouldn't be happening -- but I also know Sandra, and I know that it's time for her to have new challenges. I get to have new challenges all the time because I get to create other shows, but she doesn't get to do that, so I fully understood it,” continued Rhimes.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Promises To Be More Than Avengers Spin Off 3799001 News

The critics got a first glance at what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D looks like yesterday, (Sunday Aug 4) when they were treated to a special screening of the first episode. And those same critics got to grill producer Joss Whedon afterwards.

The show - created for ABC by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen – is set in the same universe as creations like Iron Man; it contains the super-human criminals that S.H.I.E.L.D will have to battle each week and takes place after The Avengers’ Battle of New York.

"Every week it's not going to be some new hero," Whedon explains. "There could be a device, there could be a mystery.” The show will focus on characters who aren’t blessed (or cursed) with superpowers, rather it will look at the intricacies of teamwork and how the group work together to bring down the threat.

"There are so many aspects to what's happened since everybody in the world found out there's a superhero team and that there were aliens that invaded New York," Whedon told critics. (KMBZ)

"We want to be able to change it up every week. We want to be able to deal with every aspect, the spy stuff, the hero stuff, the heartfelt stuff...every week you get something that feels a little bit different, so it's not just, you know, turkey every day."

It looks as though superhero TV shows are regaining their vogue; after Arrow was such a hit, a Green Lantern series has been announced to combine on CW, and with S.H.I.E.L.D premiering on Sept. 24, we could be seeing a lot more of our favourite comic book creations hitting the small, as well as the big, screen.

LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian Fell In Love On Set of "Northern Lights," But At 40, What's Happened To His Career? 3744324 News

When LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian fell in love on the set of Northern Lights, things were already looking a little bleak for the American actor. Here was a guy with the looks of a genuine Hollywood leading star - a guy who had served his time on U.S. television (Sunset Beach), like many A-listers before him, George Clooney, Kevin Bacon, etc. So why has Cibrian - who turned 40 last week - lost his way in the tangled world of Hollywood?

In 2006, Cibrian joined the cast of Fox show Vanished midway through the series. The show focused on the disappearance of the wife of a Georgia senator, which is revealed as being part of a wider conspiracy. The family of the missing woman, a pair of FBI agents and a journalist are drawn into the ever-evolving mystery - sounds alright doesn't it? Well, it wasn't. And it was cancelled after nine of the thirteen episodes. Yep, that means Fox deemed it wasn't even worth revealing where the wife of the Georgian senator ended up.

Next for Cibrian came a rather uninspiring casting as Jason Austin in the ABC remake of ITV's British drama Footballers Wives. Called Football Wives, the show actually boasted a pretty decent cast including Gabrielle Union, Lucy Lawless, Ving Rhames and James Van Der Beek, though, surprise surprise, the network chose not to pick up the show.

Following the Football Wives disappointment, married man Cibrian had a much-publicized affair with LeAnn Rimes, the popular American country star. The couple went public with their romance in August of that year, with Cibrian filing for divorce from his wife Brandi Glanville. "I can't change the past and I'm truly sorry that people got hurt along the way but not everything reported in the media is reality and continuing to rehash things publicly only makes it more difficult for everyone to heal," the actor said in a statement to E! Online.

Guest spots on Samantha Who? Dirty Sexy Money and Ugly Betty followed for Cibrian and he later joined the cast of CSI: Miami as an officer from the Hollywood division. It's probably exactly the sort of thing that he needed to be doing, though Cibrian's contract was not picked up for the 2010-2011 season.

That year, the actor guest starred as a bounty hunter on multiple episodes of NBC's drama series Chase though a huge opportunity came in March 2011,when Cibrian was cast as the lead in the NBC pilot for The Playboy Club, a big-bidget TV series focusing on the first Playboy Club in Chicago in 1962 and starring Hollywood actress Amber Heard.

Out of nowhere, the show became the first cancellation of 2011-12 television season, though it appeared to be no fault of Cibrian, with critics tearing the writing apart. Despite his website dubbing the show one of the most anticipated of the year, Tim Goodman of the Hollywood Reporter said of The Playboy Club, "It was [a] bad show, period. The writing was weak, the acting spotty and the sexism too ridiculous and obvious to comment on more than once."

LeAnn Rimes has sold over 37 million records worldwide and retains a large following across the world. She has won several awards, including two Grammys, three ACMs, a CMA, 12 Billboard Music Awards and one American Music award, however, the majority of press attention in recent years has focused on her very public spats with Cibrian's ex-wife Brandi Glanville and her weight loss.

Cibrian is clearly a talented actor, who may yet find an interesting role on television despite the fickle nature of the American small-screen business. He needs network backing, good scripts and decent co-stars: not too much to ask for is it?

Until that role comes calling, he'll star in Tyler Perry's Single Moms Club set for release in 2014. After that, it's The Best Man Holiday - a comedy with Terrence Howard. Sigh.

Mad Men Recap Of The Crash: Is Don Draper Becoming Self-Aware? 3675652 News

Don Draper has enough flashbacks to his childhood when he isn’t on drugs, so on the latest episode of Mad Men you’d have hoped that the show’s main protagonist would be tripping out with something a little more left field when he is injected with a drugs cocktail from the mysterious Dr Hecht. But nope, it’s back to his salad days for him.

Anyway, the main thing that The Week seems to be focusing on in latest episode, The Crash, is that Draper is starting to show some signs of self-awareness – even if he won’t let on to any of the rest of the cast. He’s always been a hard ass, and more than happy to screw over people for his own gains, but there are a couple of lines where the TV mogul seems to be fully aware of his own behavior. "The timbre of my voice is as important as the content," Don tells Ken at one point "I don't know whether I'll be forceful or submissive, but I must be there in the flesh." See what we mean? He’s fully aware that what he’s saying isn’t what he’s meaning.

The thing is, the show’s other main characters are starting to tire of this. Sylvia’s pretty much done with him, while Ted’s really annoyed with him too, despite only recently merging Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce with Cutler, Gleason and Chaough. His kids are drifting further apart from him too, so with five episodes left of the season, is Don going to finally get found out? Everything seems to be pointing towards a big fat ‘Yes’.

Final Views: Barbara Walters Set To Retire On Monday Morning 3660084 News

Ground-breaking television journalist Barbara Walters is to announce her retirement on Monday's episode of The View. Walters, 83, will finally say goodbye to the news industry next summer, an ABC spokesperson confirmed to the Los Angeles Times on Sunday evening (May 12, 2013).

The network still plans to make good use of Walters' talents until then, with the TV personality continuing to anchor and report for ABC as well as appearing on The View. "I am very happy with my decision and look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead both on 'The View' and with ABC News," she said in a statement, "I created 'The View' and am delighted it will last beyond my leaving it."  Walters will also retain her executive producer role on the long-running weekday show gabfest.

Speculation of Walters' retirement first emerged in March after she underwent a health scare that included a brief stay in hospital. It later turned out she had been diagnosed with chicken pox, though made no announcement at the time.

The 83-year-old has been a pioneer for women in the television industry for years, working her way up from researcher on the Today show to becoming co-host of the morning program, eventually switching to ABC after 15 years. She became the first woman to host an evening newscast when she teamed with Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News in 1976 and began a 37-year relationship with the network.
