ZODIAC DIRECTOR INSPIRED BY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
ZODIAC director DAVID FINCHER's real life experience of the Zodiac serial killer inspired his thriller movie.
The filmmaker - who grew up near San Francisco, California 35 years ago - recalls how the secret slayer sent a taunting letter to the press threatening to hunt down and kill children on a school bus during a series of unsolved murders.
The chilling memory has haunted him ever since, and Fincher became increasingly obsessed with the case - and the criminal - as he grew up.
He says, "I was a little surprised my dad still put me on the bus when we had a car. But everyone just assumed he'd be caught at any moment.
"How do people get that bent? How does it happen? I've been angry. I've been furious. But it's never occurred to me to beat somebody until they're dead."
The Zodiac murderer killed five people between December 1968 and October 1969. The case has yet to be closed.
