WRITER/FILMMAKER ROBBE-GRILLET DIES

French writer and filmmaker ALAIN ROBBE-GRILLET has died at the age of 85. Robbe-Grillet was taken to the Caen University Hospital in Caen, France over the weekend (16-17Feb08) to receive treatment for cardiac problems. He passed away on Monday (18Feb08) morning. Robbe-Grillet is best known for pioneering the "new novel" genre in the 1950s, a movement that threw out traditional literary conventions, including punctuation, narrative and character development. Among his highest regarded books are Les Gommes and La Jalousie. Robbe-Grillet went on to write screenplays including Last Year At Marienbad. He also directed movies such as L'Immortelle, Trans-Europ-Express and Eden And After.
