WOLVERINE HAS CLAWS TO DEFEAT HANNAH MONTANA IN UK
X-Men Origins: Wolverine easily slashed away the challenge of Hannah Montana: The Movie at the UK box office this weekend, it has been confirmed.
The Marvel film took £6.7 million in its opening weekend on release in the UK, having topped the US box office charts with an $85 million opening.
Despite an underwhelming critical response to the exploration of the adamantium-clawed mutant's past, 20th Century Fox announced this week it was commencing work on a sequel, with Hugh Jackman reprising his most famous role.
Wolverine's nearest rival at the UK box office, Hannah Montana: The Movie, entered the UK and Ireland box office charts in second but fell well short of matching its US success.
While the Disney spin-off earned $17 million on its opening day on US release alone, the Miley Cyrus-starring film took just over £2 million in its first three days on release in the UK.
Last week's number one film, political thriller State of Play, fell to third while new romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past debuted in fourth.
Time travel comedy 17 Again, starring High School Musical actor Zac Efron, remained in the top five, while Dreamworks animation Monsters vs Aliens fell to sixth.
The top ten films at the UK box office are: (last week's position)
