WIRELESS FESTIVAL KICKS OFF

The Whites Stripes pulled the curtain down on the first night of the O2 Wireless Festival at Hyde Park last night.

Jack and Meg White performed with screens set up behind them showing themselves and the crowd in red and white silhouettes.

Beginning with Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, the pair ripped through 20 songs including tracks from their forthcoming album Icky Thump.

Their set included the Dolly Parton cover Jolene, first-album track Cannon and fan-favourite Seven Nation Army.

Before the Whites Stripes, US rockers Queens of the Stone Age performed an hour long set of classic songs from their previous albums as well as latest singles 3s and 7s and Sick, Sick, Sick.

Earlier in the day sets from the Bees and Satellite Party - featuring Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell - had energised the crowd, but it was the White Stripes who stole the show with a mammoth set.

Tonight the O2 Wireless festival continues and embraces a new venue as the Leeds concerts also begin.

The festival is split between London and Leeds in a similar way to the Carling Weekend and tonight's Leeds show will feature the White Stripes and the bands from yesterday's Hyde Park gig.

In London, Faithless, Mark Ronson and Kelis are among the star attractions before Sunday's headliners Daft Punk and Monday's acts Kaiser Chiefs and Editors.
