WINSLET RECALLS SURREAL MOUNTAIN MEETING
KATE WINSLET realised how famous she had become following her blockbuster movie TITANIC - when she was recognised by a half-blind man deep in the Himalayas.
The British actress found international stardom with her role in the 1997 blockbuster, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
But Winslet was unaware how popular the movie was throughout the world - until a surreal meeting with a local during a walking trip around the Indian mountain range.
She says, "A couple of years after Titanic came out, I went to India. I was walking in the foothills of the Himalayas, just me and my backpack, and a man came towards me with a walking stick. He must have been about 85, and he was blind in one eye.
“He looked at me and said, ‘You - Titanic!’ I said yes, and he put his hand on his heart and said, ‘Thank you’. I burst into tears. It really helped me to understand how much that film had given to so many people.”
