WATERS GETS TO WORK ON HAIRSPRAY SEQUEL
Movie musical HAIRSPRAY is heading back to the big screen - creator JOHN WATERS has signed a deal to write a sequel.
The 1980s hit was brought back to life last year (07) with John Travolta cross-dressing to play Edna Turnblad.
The movie was a hit, grossing more than $200 million (GBP100 million) worldwide - prompting New Line Cinema bosses to turn to Waters for a follow-up.
Adam Shankman will reprise his role as director/choreographer, and he hopes to reunite as much of the original cast as possible.
Shankman tells Daily Variety, "I never thought much of musicals as franchises, but it certainly worked with High School Musical, and the idea of working with that cast again, and creating new material and music, is a dream come true.
"John (Waters) has such an extraordinary voice; we all can't wait to see what he has come up with."
