VARGAS GIVES BIRTH, BEGINS MATERNITY LEAVE
ABC news personality Elizabeth Vargas gave birth to a 7-lbs., 9 oz. baby boy Wednesday. ABC said previously that she would take a 9-12 week maternity leave. The impending birth of the child was cited as the official reason that Vargas was removed as anchor of ABC's World News Tonight (now simply called World News) and replaced by Charles Gibson. Vargas also co-hosts ABC's Friday-night news magazine 20/20 with John Stossel. The network has not indicated whether she will temporarily be replaced on that show or whether Stossel will host it on his own while Vargas is absent. She is married to singer/songwriter Marc Cohn, best known for his 1991 hit "Walking in Memphis."
