UNHAPPY SHERIDAN WAS AXED TO CUT COSTS

NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN was axed from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES to save money, show creator MARC CHERRY has revealed.
The actress' man-eating character Edie Britt bows out of the hit show on Sunday night (19Apr09), in a bizarre car crash that leaves her presumed dead.
Her departure comes amid rumours she was forced out because of a rift with her castmates.
But Cherry insists he was forced by network bosses at ABC to cut costs, and the axe fell on Sheridan's head because her character had run its course.
He tells TV Guide magazine, “Edie’s already slept with most of the guys on the street and has caused about as many problems as she could. There has been tremendous pressure put on me to cut costs…the network is saying to all the shows, ‘The company is really hurting financially. You must find a way to produce these shows more cheaply.'”
But Sheridan, who was paid between $100,000 (£67,000) and $200,000 (£134,000) per episode during her stint on the show, accuses Cherry of wasting her character.
She says, “When you have a jewel, why not polish it and put it out there for all to see?"
And she warns axing her may backfire for Cherry: “(Killing off Edie) was a risky decision that could have devastating ramifications."
