U.K. COURT RULES SPRINGER "OPERA" NOT BLASPHEMOUS

A British Christian organization has lost a court battle to have the 2005 BBC broadcast of Jerry Springer -- The Opera declared blasphemous and therefore prosecutable under British law. A British High Court (comparable to a U.S. appellate court) found that the production "as a whole was not and could not reasonably be regarded as aimed at, or an attack on, Christianity or what Christians held sacred." The Christian Voice had contended that the musical, which drew a record 63,000 complaints, "clearly crossed the blasphemy threshold."
