TRIBUTES TO HAYES AT HIS OWN GIG
Soul legends SAM MOORE and BILLY PAUL were among the stars who paid tribute to the late ISAAC HAYES at the concert his death prevented on Saturday night (23Aug08).
Moore stepped in at the last minute to headline the Sunset Junction Festival in Los Angeles - the spot which was to have been filled by Hayes and his band.
Fighting back tears, the soul great - who performed songs written by Hayes and his partner David Porter throughout his career - called the late star "a great friend".
Meanwhile, Me + Mrs. Jones singer Billy Paul called for a moment's silence during his stirring set, after calling Hayes "a personal friend... I shall miss."
Jazz great Michael Henderson ended his set with Hayes' Walk On By and Philadelphia soul star Jean Carne called for a standing ovation for her friend Hayes, who she felt sure would be "smiling down" on the Los Angeles street fair he was supposed to have headlined.
Hayes collapsed and died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee on 10 August (08).
