TOP OF THE POPS IS NO MORE

Legendary British TV chart show TOP OF THE POPS aired for the last time ever last night (30JUL06) after a record-breaking 42-year reign. The sentimental swansong featured several previous star presenters - with the series' original host SIR JIMMY SAVILLE at the helm - and screened a selection of music highlights from over the years as well as the current pop chart. Saville said, "Forty-two years ago I said welcome on the very first Top of the Pops... but it belongs to the world now, they are going to carry the Top of the Pops banner." The show ended with Saville wandering backstage, shaking his head sadly before switching off the lights in an emotional farewell.
