TO BOLDLY GO: STAR TREK MAKES $72.5M IN FIRST WEEKEND

Star Trek has warped to the top of the North American box office after making $72.5 million in ticket sales.

The JJ Abrams reboot made more in its opening weekend than any of the other previous ten Star Trek films, even when adjusted for inflation, according to the Reuters news agency.

Last week's number one, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, saw its opening weekend takings of $85 million - the highest of 2009 - slump to $27 million.

Star Trek is not expected to experience such a drop in sales due to positive reviews and word of mouth.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana and Simon Pegg star in the reboot of the 1960s show, which explains how the crew first met.
