TILDA SWINTON SAYS WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN

Oscar winner Tilda Swinton is to star in the film adaptation of bestselling book We Need To Talk About Kevin, it has been announced.

The Michael Clayton star will take the lead role as the mother to a troubled son in Lynne Ramsay's adaptation of Lionel Shriver's novel, the Hollywood Reporter states.

Winner of the Orange Prize in 2005, We Need To Talk About Kevin tells of a fictional school massacre carried out by the titular troubled youth, with his smart and wealthy New Yorker mother forced confront her son's problems and the deaths he caused, as well as her responsibility for Kevin's actions.

The rights to the book were purchased by BBC Films in 2005 with Ramsay signed on to direct soon after.

Jennifer Fox, who worked with Swinton on Michael Clayton, will produce but no screenwriter has yet been confirmed.

Shriver had been initially offered a consultative role in the scriptwriting process but told the Guardian in 2006 she had "had it up to my eyeballs with that book".

"Not that I'm complaining, but I feel that I did my job", she added.

"I need somebody else to come in and inject a freshness."

Ramsay won a best newcomer Bafta for her 1999 debut Ratcatcher, which won prizes at Cannes, before receiving further critical acclaim for 2002's Morvern Callar, starring Samantha Morton.
