British actress EMMA THOMPSON is forced to lie to her husband when she buys new clothes - because he hates her spending money on expensive designer gear.
Thompson admits her partner, fellow thespian Greg Wise, is often mean with his money and only buys new underpants every five years.
And the Oscar-winner has to go to great lengths to cover up the results of her shopping sprees.
She says, "When I whimper as I watch him pull his ancient, baggy and fake Calvin Klein pants up over his perfectly formed six pack to his chin, he snaps, 'Oh stop it. These will be fine for the next five years.'
"If I buy anything, I lie about it, or stain or chip it slightly and claim if was 75p in the Scope (charity) shop. I have managed to introduce three pairs of shoes, a handbag and a Fedora, all by Donna Karen, using this deception."
And Thompson has to continue her tricks when she replaces her husband's cheap, old garments with expensive new versions.
She adds, "I have to colour in any logos with magic-marker in case he spots them."
