SUPERMAN HOUSE IS SAVED
LATEST: Fans of comic book hero SUPERMAN have succeeded in their bid to save the house where the legendary character was first created.
Bestselling author Brad Meltzer visited Superman creator Jerry Siegel's former home in Cleveland, Ohio while researching his new novel, Book of Lies, and was disappointed to find the building in a state of severe disrepair.
He subsequently launched a campaign to raise money to rebuild the house - teaming up with fellow writers, comic book creators and famous friends including Superman director Richard Donner.
Meltzer organised an online fundraising auction, selling off lots including film memorabilia and a walk-on role in hit TV show Heroes.
The auction raised $100,000 (GBP56,000) - double what was expected - and will allow the group to carry out all of the necessary renovations and repairs.
Meltzer says, "We're all Clark Kent (Superman's alter-ego). We all know what it is like to be boring and ordinary and we all want to be able to rip open our shirt and do something beyond ourselves.
"That's what happened here. Ordinary people made a difference."
