SUCHET MISSED OUT ON BELGIAN COIN MINT
Actor DAVID SUCHET narrowly missed out on the chance to be immortalised on Belgian currency as his famous character HERCULE POIROT - because the idea was scrapped once the country joined the single European currency. The British star has portrayed Agatha Christie's fictional Belgian detective in numerous TV series since the late 1980s, and he admits the country's officials admired his character so much, they wanted to adorn their currency with his face. He says, "Representatives of the Belgian mint got in touch with my agent, but then the currency switched to the euro (the currency of the 13 states in the Eurozone). All my hopes were dashed."
