STONE TEMPLE PILOTS DUO SUED BY RECORD LABEL

Rocker SCOTT WEILAND has been dealt another blow in what has turned out to be an already turbulent year - he is being sued by his record company alongside STONE TEMPLE PILOTS bandmate ERIC KRETZ.
The band's frontman and drummer had a lawsuit filed against them by their label Atlantic Records on Thursday (12Jun08), accusing the duo of trying to prematurely end their recording contract with Warner Music Group.
The pair have reportedly threatened to refrain from performing under their contract and now wish to end their agreement with the label unless it makes changes to their deal, according to the suit filed in New York's U.S. District Court.
In the suit, the label states the band - who have already penned six albums under the agreement - must record another LP, and that label bosses have the right to demand up to two more records from the group if they so wish.
The label also alleges the pair are trying to use California laws to terminate the contract, when, in fact, the terms of agreement were written under New York laws.
Atlantic say the claims made by Weiland and Kretz suggesting they have right to terminate their contract "have given rise to a definite, real and substantial controversy between the parties that threatens to harm Atlantic's business", according to online reports.
The Stone Temple Pilots rose to fame in the 1990s, but split in 2002. They went on to reunite last month (May08) after Weiland was axed from Velvet Revolver in March (08) following a series of spats with bandmates.
Last month (May08), the rocker was sentenced to eight days behind bars for driving under the influence, but reportedly walked free just 10 hours after arriving at a California prison to serve the sentence.
A spokesperson for the band had no immediate comment on the lawsuit as WENN goes to press.
