STEWART TO GUEST STAR IN DOCTOR WHO?
Actor PATRICK STEWART hopes pal DAVID TENNANT will help him land his dream role in hit British TV show DOCTOR WHO. The Star Trek star will be appearing alongside Tennant in a London production of Hamlet next year (08) - and is hoping the pairing will lead to a role in the television series. The 67-year-old says, "I would love to be in Doctor Who. I am doing some RSC work with David Tennant next year so who knows? If we gel on stage we could on screen."

(In any case NATURALLY as some aptly serious investigator/rights
activist/eco-warrior-type, or whatever might spur viewers to make themselves
so)
Well there's a coincidence… I’d recently had an odd, random thought about
Patrick Stewart - the thought of him playing Doctor Who. Years ago I was a big
fan of both Dr Who & Star Trek. Getting older in the course of their new
serieses & re-runs, they’d both become for me substantially long lost
interests. My ‘favourite’ incarnation of Dr Who isn’t the one I’d mostly seen
at the height of my being enthralled by the programme, but came to be the very
first one there was – the one played by William Hartnell. When he quit the
role, he himself thought that there was no-one else at the time who could play
The Doctor but Patrick Troughton – who indeed got the job. Now it IS a children’
s programme, and it’s no disrespect to all the great actors who have played The
Doctor since these first ones that it’s become steadily of less interest to me.
Besides anything true of the ‘developments’ in the show itself, I’ve gotten
older.
Chewing on that notion which recently came to me, though, I thought how of all
the 'dream performances' I could imagine or care to see, there’d be perhaps
none more than seeing Patrick Stewart playing Doctor Who. Maybe, for me, there’
s no-one who seems closer to having something that William Hartnell’s ‘
original’ had…
That said, there’s no thought or suggestion here of his replacing David Tennant
in the TV show. Not at all. I’m just wondering if David Tennant’s doctor might
be up for meeting an older version of himself… Or if maybe Hollywood could pick
up the idea….
