STARS GATHER TO CELEBRATE SEEGER'S 90TH

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, JOHN MELLENCAMP and DAVE MATTHEWS were among stars who gathered to celebrate folk icon PETE SEEGER's 90th birthday with a tribute concert on Sunday (03May09).
More than 40 stars and 15,000 fans came out for the event at Manhattan's Madison Square Garden, which included a greeting from U.S. President Barack Obama.
Springsteen, who performed with Seeger on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in the days leading up to President Obama's inauguration in January (09), headlined the show.
Meanwhile Seeger, who did not sing during the four-and-a-half hour event, joined in on several numbers - playing his banjo and leading the audience through songs including Amazing Grace and Goodnight, Irene.
Other stars paying tribute included Kris Kristofferson, Rufus Wainwright, Ben Harper, Tom Morello and Ani DiFranco, who sang their own songs and tunes made popular by Seeger over the last 70 years.
