STAR TREK FINDS WARP SPEED TO TOP UK BOX OFFICE CHARTS
JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot has topped the UK box office charts with almost £6 million grossed in its first weekend on release.
The science-fiction film, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg, repeated its chart-topping US success by knocking last week's number one film - X-Men Origins: Wolverine - off the top spot.
Animated film Coraline, based on the book by Neil Gaiman, debuted in second in the UK with £2.42 million in box office receipts.
Though the transatlantic success of Star Trek makes a sequel to the Paramount film a virtual certainty, it again failed to surpass the box office haul of Wolverine, despite stronger reviews.
The Hugh Jackman-starring comic book film earned the biggest opening of the year in both the US and UK after debuting on May 29th.
The remainder of the UK top ten was comprised of previous residents, with time travel comedy 17 Again slipping out of the top five to number six.
The highest new entry after Star Trek and Coraline was period romance Cheri - starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend - which entered the UK and Ireland box office chart at number 11
The top ten films in the UK are: (last week's position)
