SPEARS TO OPEN VMAS
BRITNEY SPEARS will open the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (07Aug08) with a heartfelt message to her fans.
The news ends weeks of speculation about the pop star's role in this year's show, which will be hosted by comedian Russell Brand.
Spears has appeared alongside Brand in an ad for the telecast and gossips have suggested she'll perform and present an award with Olympic champion Michael Phelps.
In a statement, Spears says, "MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."
Spears has been nominated for 16 Video Music Awards but has yet to win one. She's nominated for three prizes on Sunday - Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for Piece of Me.
She hit the headlines at last year's (07) VMAs after giving a lacklustre performance.

I am so proud of Brittany and how much she has accomplished. I am so happy that she
is nominated for three awards. I don't understand why Brittany thinks she has lost
alot of fans, but I think that people are routing for her. She looks absolutely beautifu
l and healthy. She is involved in alot of projects, and I am glad that the the people
who knew her before, are back in her life. I read that Brittany is going to do a
duet with Justin Timberlake in the future. People that knew Brittany realize that
she had gone through a terrible time, and that the Brittany they knew is back. I love
seeing her with her precious boys, who seem to adore her as much as she adores them.
Her father came into her life when she really needed him. Brittany's mother had no
parenting skills, so Brittany did the best she could with what she knew. I really don't
watch the MTV awards, but I will definitely be home to see Brittany open the awards.
