SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE SWEEPS BAFTAS WITH SEVEN AWARDS

Slumdog Millionaire has swept the board at the Bafta film awards with seven prizes, including best film.

Danny Boyle was named best director for the Mumbai-set film - a Golden Globe winner four times over - which also claimed the adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing music and sound awards.

Kate Winslet was named best actress for The Reader - having also been nominated in the same category for Revolutionary Road - while Mickey Rourke claimed a further best actor award for his role in The Wrestler.

"It's such a pleasure to be back here, out of the darkness," Rourke said after accepting his prize, which continues his career renaissance.

The late Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor for his turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight with Penelope Cruz winning the best supporting actress prize for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Other winners included Monty Python member Terry Gilliam - who was made a Bafta fellow - and Adulthood director Noel Clarke, who claimed the Orange Rising Star award.
