SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE FINALLY OPENS IN INDIA
The Oscar-nominated Slumdog Millionaire has opened in India amid criticism it exploits poverty.
The film has already made almost $50 million (£36 million) at the US and British box offices and yesterday received ten Oscar nominations, including for best picture and best director.
Slumdog also picked up four Golden Globes early this month but has received differing reviews back in India, where the film is set.
Some critics have claimed the Danny Boyle film exploits the poverty experienced by those living in the Mumbai slums and the city has witnessed a series of small-scale protests over the use of the word "slumdog", which some claim is insulting.
The makers of the film, however, have urged Indian filmgoers to ignore any criticism and enjoying the "riveting" picture.
A Hindi dubbed version of the film has also gone on release alongside the original version in the hope it will reach as many people as possible.
