SKA HERO JOHNNY MOORE DEAD AT 70

THE SKATALITES founder JOHNNY MOORE has lost his battle with cancer in his native Jamaica. He was 70.
The revered ska and reggae trumpeter formed the iconic group in the mid-1960s with saxophonists Tommy MCCook and Roland Alphonso and trombonist Don Drummond.
Music promoter and friend Herbie Miller says, "Johnny was the most creative of the trumpeters from the ska period."
Moore spent 15 years living in New York before returning to Jamaica in the early 1980s. Since then he has toured with Bunny Wailer and hosted low-key gigs in the Kingston area.
He died on Saturday (16Aug08) at a friend's home.
