SIMPLE LIFE KEEPS JEWEL SANE

Singer JEWEL credits her isolated upbringing in Alaska and current home life on a remote Texas farm with keeping her grounded. The INTUITION singer grew up on a ranch in Alaska and claims the primitive lifestyle forced her to develop her creative talents. She explains, "I grew up on a homestead, or ranch in Alaska. I grew up really isolated - no electricity, no plumbing, we had a coal stove for heat. "We had an outhouse, we used to catch our own fish, butcher our own cattle and live off the land pretty much. "My family's really musical - all my cousins sing and write, they all sculpt and marble-carve, they're very creative. "So I was just sort of one in the line - I certainly don't think I'm the most talented of them - they're all really creative. "We didn't have TV - so what else are you going to do? "I think it gave me a good start for this business - this business is a path so many people lose their footing on and I think my upbringing gave me a pretty level head. "It's great to go from the ranch where we'll be doctoring calves and the next day we'll get on a plane and be at an Oscar party. "It's sort of surreal, but it helps you keep a level head and not take anything too seriously."
