SIMON + GARFUNKEL TEAM UP AT TRIBUTE

PAUL SIMON and ART GARFUNKEL reunited for a rare performance on stage at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. last night (23May07) as part of a tribute to singer/songwriter Simon. The duo performed the classics Bridge Over Troubled Water and Cecilia after Simon credited his on-off partner for his part in his own success. Paying tribute to the Bright Eyes hitmaker, Simon introduced the singer, calling him, "My dear friend and partner in arguments, Art Garfunkel." Simon, who was being honoured with the Library Of Congress' first Gershwin Award for his contribution to popular song, was also joined onstage by members of South African singing troupe Ladysmith Black Mambazo for a performance of Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes from his landmark Graceland album. It marked the first time the singer has performed with the Zulu choir since 1999. Welcoming them onstage, Simon called the group, "My brothers from South Africa." The singer/songwriter was also honoured with performances by Alison Krauss, James Taylor, reggae singer Stephen Marley and Latino vocalist Marc Anthony, who all sang Simon songs at the event. Simon closed the tribute by jamming with Stevie Wonder and gospel group the Dixie Hummingbirds on a rendition of his uplifting Loves Me Like a Rock.
