SHREK THE THIRD TOPS UK BOX OFFICE

Shrek the Third has gone straight in at the top of the UK box office despite indifferent reviews to the latest instalment of the franchise.

The animated ogre-caper, featuring the voices of Cameron Diaz and Mike Myers, knocked Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer down to second place.

According to figures from Screen International, Shrek took £16.7 million over the weekend compared to £1.4 million for Fantastic Four.

The latest Shrek follows the loveable ogre as he tries to find the rightful heir to the throne of Far, Far Away.

In third place was Ocean's Thirteen which spent its fourth week in the box office top-ten, taking £966,179 and taking a total of £22.9 million since its arrival in the UK.

The slick heist movie, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, was warmly received by critics.

The third instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is also still pulling in cinemagoers, taking £682,172 in its sixth week in the box office top-ten.

Rounding off the chart is the newly released Hostel: Part II, La Vie En Rose, Apne, Vacancy and Captivity.
