Sean Penn's marriage to Robin Wright Penn has survived their troubled patches because their relationship is ''laid on a strong foundation of love.''

The 'Milk' actor's wife of 13-years, actress Robin Wright Penn says they have overcome troubled patches - including two aborted divorce attempts - in their union because they have worked hard on their relationship.

She said: "All marriages have their phases. It's life. We go through it, if we're married long enough. If you're lucky you grow and you work it out.

"There are lots of chapters in our book. You have to do the work in your marriage, but it has to be laid on a strong foundation of love.

"We have that, and shared history deepens that foundation."

The couple - who have two children, Dylan, 18, and 15-year-old Hopper - first called off their divorce last year.

Sean, 48, filed legal separation papers again in April this year, only for them to reconcile shortly afterwards and withdraw divorce plans.

However, Robin, 43, says they are now stronger than ever.

She explained: "It feels good now. If it didn't I wouldn't still be here.

"Sean is hopeless domestically. I'm the homemaker, and that's fine with me, because I really like that."
