SCORSESE TO DITCH HOLLYWOOD?

MARTIN SCORSESE is sick of conforming to Hollywood's movie-making constraints, and is breaking away to start adapting a Japanese novel for the screen. The GOODFELLAS director received a standing ovation at the Rome Film Festival this weekend (14-15OCT06) for his new LEONARDO DiCAPRIO-starring movie THE DEPARTED. But despite creating a string of popular movies, Scorsese is ready to work on projects closer to his heart, and bringing SHUSAKU ENDO's novel SILENCE to the silver screen is his first priority. He says, "I think I am finding that when there are very big budgets there is less risk that can be taken." And although movie giant Warner Brothers, the studio behind The Departed, have been supportive of Scorsese's creative needs, he adds, "I don't know how much longer that can hold out, with regard to what kind of movie they - the major studios - would like to make and the kind of film I'd like to make."
