SACHA BARON COHEN SAVES BRUNO AFTER EDITING

Bruno, the new comedy from Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen, will receive a widespread release in the US after censors granted the film an R certificate.

The Universal Pictures movie, due for release in July, sees British actor Baron Cohen in the guise of gay Austrian fashion reporter Bruno.

While Baron Cohen's previous film Borat took a massive $261 million in 2006, the box office prospects of Bruno had been in jeopardy when the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initially gave the film an NC-17 rating which would have prevented under-17s from seeing the comedy.

However, after Baron Cohen and director Larry Charles re-edited the film, it has received an R rating, the same certificate granted to Borat.

The Hollywood Reporter states the MPAA based its R rating on the "pervasive strong and crude sexual content, graphic nudity and language" featured in Bruno.

It is thought scenes toned down by Baron Cohen and Charles included the Bruno character appearing to engage in a sexual act with another man and a scene in which he sneaks naked into a hunter's tent.
