REPORTING FOR ABC FROM IRAQ THE BBC
Challenged by cutbacks and forced to retrench, ABC News, which no longer maintains a full-time correspondent in Iraq, said Monday that it will now get breaking news reports in the country from the BBC, which still does. In a statement, ABC News President David Westin attempted to put a positive spin on the move. "By working more closely with the BBC," he said, "we will increase our capabilities in Iraq and the region, while at the same time freeing our people and resources to concentrate on the unique reporting that our audiences value so highly." Meanwhile, the New York Observer reported Wednesday that on the eve of the latest hostilities in Gaza, CBS cut about a dozen employees from its Tel Aviv bureau. CBS, it observed, is now the "only one of the big three networks without a full-time correspondent in Israel."
