RED ROAD WINS AT LONDON FILM FESTIVAL
British movie newcomer ANDREA ARNOLD's CCTV movie RED ROAD picked up the BFI Sutherland Trophy at the closing of the London Film Festival yesterday (02NOV06). Arnold accepted her prize at a gala screening of ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARRITU's multi-racial drama BABEL, which stars BRAD PITT and CATE BLANCHETT. The festival's artistic director SANDRA HEBRON praised Arnold for "one of the most striking British feature debuts in years, Red Road is an assured, multi-layered slice of poetic realism". MARK HERBERT accepted the Alfred Dunhill UK Film Talent Kudos for producing gang drama THIS IS ENGLAND, while German director FLORIAN HENCKEL VON DONNERSMARCK won the Satyajit Ray award for debut feature for THE LIVES OF OTHERS (DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN). Other winners included LOLA director JAVIER REBOLLO with Fipresci prize, THIN film-maker LAUREN GREENFIELD with Best Feature Length Documentary and SILENCE IS GOLDEN director CHRIS SHEPHERD with the Turner Classic Movies short film award.
