RADCLIFFE SUFFERS ONSTAGE 'SHRINKAGE'

DANIEL RADCLIFFE has to swallow his pride when he strips nude on Broadway in the play EQUUS - because his stage fright makes his genitals shrink.
When the Harry Potter star played mentally disturbed Alan Strang in Equus on London's West End last year (07) he discovered he suffered from a phenomenon he calls Michaelangelo's David Effect - named after the the biblical battle between David and Goliath.
Radcliffe explains, "He (David) wasn't very well endowed, because he was fighting Goliath. There was very much that effect. You tighten up like a hamster."
Rather than employ any trickery to make himself appear bigger - Radcliffe has learned to accept the shrinking as a necessary side effect of being naked onstage.
He says, "The first time it happened, I turned around and went, 'You know there's a thousand people here, and I don't think even one of them would expect you to look you best in this situation.'"

I have been a fan and participant of the theater for many years going back as far as elementary school. I recently traveled over 9 hours for my birthday to go to New York to see amongst other spectacular sights, Daniel in Equus and would have gladly traveled further!Daniel has had to weather many storms by his choice; I applaud him and urge others to follow. I saw this magnificant production on Friday the 19th of September and was completely awe-struck. As a 39 year old young woman I can asure you it had very 'little' to do with Dan's profound decision to boldly step out of character; his rendention of Alan Strange was NOTHING less than riveting. It was truly a spectacular event that I wouldn't have missed for the world. Daniel & Richard were nothing less than "BRILLIANT".
