POTTER RULES UK BOX OFFICE

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has been named as the biggest earner at the UK and Ireland box office in 2007.

David Yates' adaptation of the fifth book in JK Rowling's hugely successful series of novels about the teenage wizard took more than £49.4 million in 2007.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, the third instalment in Disney's swashbuckling franchise, was the second biggest success of the year with £42.2 million in box office receipts.

It was a year for sequel success with Shrek the Third, Spider-Man 3 and The Bourne Ultimatum all reaching the top ten of the most successful films of the year.

Meanwhile Will Smith's thriller I Am Legend has been confirmed as the first number one movie of 2008 at the UK and Ireland box office.

The movie, which pulled in the biggest-ever December opening in the US, knocked Enchanted into third spot while The Golden Compass continued to attract audiences, remaining in second spot.

The highest ranking new entry was US comedy Balls of Fury, making its debut in seventh position, while controversial drama The Kite Runner opened in ninth.

The top ten films of 2007 were:

4 The Simpsons Movie (£38,544,114)
5 Spider-Man 3 (£33,547,946)

7 The Bourne Ultimatum (£23,703,150)
8 Transformers (£22,863,864)
9 Mr Bean's Holiday (£22,142,332)
10 Hot Fuzz (£21,005,064)

And this week's top five movies are:
1 I Am Legend (£6.55 million)
2 The Golden Compass (£2.19 million)
3 Enchanted (£2.15 million)
4 St Trinian's (£1.78 million)
5 Alvin and the Chipmunks (£1.37 million)
