POET FINKEL DEAD AT 79

American poet DONALD FINKEL has died of complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was 79.
Finkel passed away on 15 November (08) at his home in St. Louis, Missouri.
Born in 1929, the writer went on to publish 14 volumes of poetry throughout his career, including Simeon, A Joyful Noise, The Farbage Wars and most recently, Not So the Chairs: Selected and New Poems, published in 2003.
His work also appeared in publications including American magazine The New Yorker.
Finkel began teaching at the Iowa Writers' Workshop and Bard College before joining the Washington University faculty in 1960. He held his position there until 1991, and remained poet in residence emeritus at the time of his death.
His wife, Constance Urdang, a novelist and poet, died in 1996. He is survived by his son, Tom, two daughters, Liza and Amy, a half-brother, and two grandchildren.
