PLOWRIGHT'S FAILING SIGHT COST HER ROYAL ROLE
Actress DAME JOAN PLOWRIGHT missed out on a leading role in the Oscar-nominated movie THE QUEEN, because of her failing eyesight.
Plowright, the widow of screen legend SIR LAURENCE OLIVIER, was due to play the part of the Queen Mother in the film, which focuses on the week following the death of DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES in a Paris, France car crash in 1997.
However, 77-year-old Plowright lost out to SYLVIA SYMS, after experiencing problems with her sight.
Script writer PETER MORGAN says, "We thought it would be Joan. Director STEPHEN FREARS is friends with her and he told her that this is what we had in mind.
"I met her and thought she was terrific. And so he said: 'Well, you'd better make that part of it bigger and give her some more fun stuff.'
"(But) she developed a bad problem with her eyes which meant she was uninsurable."

What does failing eyesight have to do with a speaking role. They employed
Chris Reeve and he could barely breathe on his own. Please, I'm not one for
litigation but that is SOO discriminatory. She would have played the frail
ancient Queen Mother, not Tom Cruise's sidekick in the next Mission Impossible
flick. Totally lame.
