PIRATES TAKES AIM AT EMMYS

ABC plans to challenge the annual Emmy ceremonies by airing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl opposite the awards show on Aug. 27, the New York Post observed today (Tuesday). The Emmys will air on NBC this year (they air in rotation between ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox), and ordinarily the opposing networks offer weak competition -- hoping to use the awards ceremonies to blow their own horns. But this year, ABC's top shows, Lost and Desperate Housewives, were snubbed in the nominations, and the Post indicates that the slight was the reason for ABC's decision to program a big movie against the telecast. ABC officials were reportedly "at a company-wide retreat" on Monday and could not be reached for comment. (Ironically, NBC announced late Monday that ABC-TV legend Dick Clark will be honored at this year's awards show with a special tribute segment featuring Barry Manilow.)
