TOM PETTY's AMERICAN GIRL has topped a new online poll of U.S. anthems.
To celebrate Independence Day on Saturday (04Jul09), editors at Rolling Stone magazine invited readers to vote for their top patriotic songs - and Petty's 1977 tune beat Don MCLean's American Pie to the top.
Also making the top five were American Woman by The Guess Who, Simon & Garfunkel's America and Born in The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen.
