PETER KAY 'INSPIRATION' TO YOUNG

Peter Kay has featured above Jane Austen and Leonardo da Vinci in a survey of inspirational artists among 18 to 25-year-olds.

The Bolton-born comedian was second only to Walt Disney on the list of top inspirations for the under-25s which also included Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Marilyn Monroe.

Film maker Tim Burton and movie star Will Smith provided Hollywood glamour to the poll which was heavily focused on modern art mediums.

An overall list featuring all age groups included many of the under-25s' choices along with Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

The YouGov poll, commissioned by the Arts Award which recognises young people's artistic development, was notably lacking figures such as Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare.

Diana Walton, the head of the awards body, said: "The results show that young people are inspired by a range of artists who they feel are relevant to their lives today, including comedians and musicians, but also renowned arts figures like Leonardo da Vinci."

The survey asked 6,000 people who they rated as inspiring in the world of music, dance, literature, film and visual arts.

Complete list for 18 to 25-year-olds

1 Walt Disney
2 Peter Kay
3 Banksy
4 Leonardo di Vinci
5 Bob Marley
6 Jane Austen
7 Bob Dylan
8 Tim Burton
9 Marilyn Monroe
