PETA BLASTS MEAT SALES AT LIVE EARTH

Animal rights campaigners have accused the organisers of the Live Earth concerts of hypocrisy, by selling meat at this weekend's (07Jul07) events. Concerts are taking place in seven different continents to promote awareness of climate change. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have written a letter to bosses at London's Wembley Stadium - where acts including Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform - asking them to remove meat products from fast food menus. A PETA statement reads, "Because the meat industry emits massive quantities of greenhouse gases, selling meat at a concert to benefit the environment would be like selling cigarettes at an anti-cancer fundraiser. "What people eat is more important than anything else they do – like the type of car or light bulbs they use – in determining their greenhouse-gas emissions. "In last December's UN report titled Livestock's Long Shadow, scientists concluded that the meat industry generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars, trucks, ships and planes in the world combined. PETA director Poorva Joshipura adds, "There's no such thing as a meat-eating environmentalist. Going vegetarian is the best thing anyone can do for animals, their health and the Earth."
